Variable area (V/A) meters
are suitable for most clean fluids of low to medium
viscosity. They are a simple mechanical device where the
flow of liquid or gas pushes a sliding orifice over a
precision cone. The orifice pushes against a calibrated
spring and is magnetically linked to a pointer which moves
over a graduated scale.
Variable area meters are
available in aluminium for oil duty, brass for water duty
and stainless steel for chemical duty. Flow rates from 0.1
up to 560 L/min are catered for and a high pressure rating
(240 bar for aluminium and brass, 414 bar for stainless
steel) and temperature rating (116°C) ensure that these
low cost meters are a popular choice for many engineers.
